MS2 Transportation Data Management System

MS2 is a national leader in transportation data management and analysis and has the largest traffic count database in North America. More than 260 agencies in 31 US States, and 3 Canadian Provinces, including 23 state Departments of Transportation, are using MS2 software to manage their transportation data.

We pioneered the cloud-based Transportation Data Management System that is becoming the standard for traffic data management and analysis in the US. Providing a secure, scalable enterprise solution integrated with ArcGIS Server, Google Maps, and many other data providers, MS2 software includes multiple modules for managing transportation data.

MS2 utilizes Amazon Web Services (AWS) to host our applications and client transportation data. Backed by Amazon’s massive infrastructure, our clients have access to computing and storage resources as needed. Data is safeguarded through AWS’ highly secure infrastructure.

All MS2 software modules are cloud-based and offer the following:

  • Managed cloud infrastructure
  • Unlimited cloud storage
  • Secure multi-role user access, including public view

TDMS Includes the Following Software Modules

MS2 Traffic Count Database System

MS2 Traffic Count Database System (TCDS) is a powerful cloud-based software solution that allows your agency to map, manage, analyze and visualize vehicle traffic count data. You can share data internally but can also provide a public-facing view of vetted data sets. Over 200 reports and graphs display comprehensive metrics to support and guide decisions.

The TCDS maps WIM, short count, and permanent count stations on an interactive map. Count datasets accepted through this solution include Traffic Volume, Speed, Vehicle Classification (axle and length-based), Per Vehicle Record, WIM, and gap. TCDS imports raw count data from equipment such as Diamond, HiStar, JAMAR, Miovision, Peek/Oriux, Wavetronix, and more. The system is designed to assist state DOTs with monthly Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) TMAS reporting as well as year-end HPMS submittals.

MS2 Turning Movement Count

MS2 Turning Movement Count (TMC) maps, manages, and analyzes vehicle turning movements at intersections. TMC imports data collected by Miovision, JAMAR, Iteris, Gridsmart, and other devices. TMC manages turning movement counts and provides peak hour calculations to optimize traffic signal control. Intersection diagrams provide a visual representation of the turning movements recorded at each approach.

MS2 Nonmotorized Database System

MS2 Nonmotorized Database System (NMDS) enables traffic engineers and transportation planners to map, manage, analyze, and visualize nonmotorized data collection points within their jurisdictions. Your agency can easily analyze volumes of pedestrians, bicycles, wheelchairs, and other modes of nonmotorized travel as defined in the Traffic Monitoring Guide. The interactive map allows easy selection of distinct trails or pathways for analysis.  NMDS supports data imports from a variety of count equipment that captures data from bike lanes, sidewalks, bike paths, trails, and crosswalks. The dashboard can be available to the public, allowing users to view system-wide data or navigate to a specific location using the map.

MS2 Highway Performance Monitoring System

The Federal Highway Administration requires all state transportation agencies to submit traffic statistics annually as part of the National Highway Performance Monitoring System program. MS2 Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) allows your DOT to prepare these data submissions to FHWA with confidence and ease, completing traffic-related HPMS requirements in weeks, not months. Upon completion of the annual traffic statistics for all count stations within the TCDS, the stations can be linked to the road network segments provided by the GIS group at your DOT. The linkage is managed via the MS2 HPMS module. Estimation routines in the HPMS module can be used to report AADT, D-factor, K-factor, and other traffic monitoring statistics for the entire road network.

MS2 Traffic Crash Location System

MS2 Traffic Crash Location System (TCLS) maps, manages, and analyzes traffic crash data. TCLS links raw crash data to intersection and road segments, so you can use the application to analyze traffic crash patterns to create crash density maps, crash heat maps, and intersection collision diagrams. Crash rates and crash severity rates are automatically calculated by TCLS to aid in identifying problem intersections. Police crash reports can be appended to each record for detailed analysis. Each crash is geocoded on an interactive Google map providing you with a visual assessment of crash locations in your jurisdictions.

MS2 Equipment Status Tracking System

MS2 Equipment Status Tracking System (ESTS) assists in the detailed inventory and management of transportation assets in compliance with FAST/MAP-21 TAMP requirements. ESTS streamlines the management of the vast array of field and warehouse equipment required to control, monitor, and support an agency’s traffic monitoring. The highly customizable design allows agencies to add and track performance measures over time – from a field location level to an individual asset.

MS2 Traffic Signal Management System

MS2 Traffic Signal Management System (TSMS) helps traffic engineers manage all data elements related to signalized intersections, such as intersection descriptions, signal timing plans, and details related to hardware at signalized intersections. Users can quickly access approach photos and CAD drawings as well as maintain engineering plans. Detailed notes are available in a single, comprehensive web-based portal. Users have the option to export data to Synchro and other simulation models. The TSMS integrates an interactive Google map which allows users to search and visualize intersection attributes.

MS2 Road Sign Management System

MS2 Road Sign Management System (RSMS) enables road agencies to add new and repaired road signs to an interactive Google map and powerful database inventory. Attributes stored in the database include MUTCD type, cost, facing direction, material, installation date, latitude and longitude, images, sign height and width, and much more. Traffic engineers can create reports and budget estimates based on sign installation dates. This allows users to prepare future budget estimates to help them maintain their inventory.

MS2 Work Order Tracking System

MS2 Work Order Tracking System (WOTS) empowers you to administer, notify, and track scheduled maintenance operations by crew workers. This module integrates with other MS2 modules including Equipment Status Tracking System, Traffic Count Database System, Traffic Signal Management System, and Road Sign Management System. The WOTS module allows for the following types of activity: work order entry, crew assignment, status updates, approval and closeout as well as labor, material, and equipment cost tracking. You can generate reports to ensure needed repairs are completed on schedule, and identify potential issues affecting work backlog.

The WOTS can be set up for road sign and maintenance operations. The workflow consists of order creation (trouble call), crew assignment, fieldwork notes, cost tracking (labor, material, and equipment), work inspection (optional), and order close-out. Performance metric reports help improve the efficiency of your agency’s road sign maintenance.

MS2 Permitted Lane Closure System

MS2 Permitted Lane Closure System (PLCS) supports the creation and publication of schedules governing the closure of lanes due to construction or other activities. While construction is necessary to maintain transportation infrastructure, it can be disruptive to traffic flow and directly affects the delivery of goods and services. Jurisdictions approach this problem in a variety of ways with the goal of defining and enforcing acceptable levels of traffic queuing and delay.

MS2 Traffic Forecast Management System

MS2 Traffic Forecast Management System (TFMS) facilitates traffic volume and turning movement forecasting based on your traffic count data stored in MS2 Traffic Count Database System (TCDS). It allows you to create objective traffic projections using your own models and historic counts.
